Gothic Axe Warriors

As more and more tribes turned to raiding in order to survive, the average barbarian found himself engaging his enemies with nothing more than an axe in his hand. Axes were an everyday tool, easily available before the European tribes learned to make swords well enough so they could be effective and not bend or break. Although seemingly primitive, the axe's weight proved to be very effective against armoured opponents and proved useful against shields, and its shape was useful for prying them out of an opponent's hands by reaching around and hooking them also. As tribes came together and confederations were created, raiding parties increasingly consisted largely of axe warriors - a great threat to the even the most organised and well-trained Roman armies.
