Longsword Cohort

The longsword proves to be an effective weapon, even in Roman hands.

The two-handed longsword was the Celtic weapon of choice. Many Roman soldiers had their shields and armour split in half by a barbaric swing of Celtic iron. Not every warrior could wield this weapon, however - a young freeman had to prove himself in battle before he was given a longsword, as such items were status symbols due to the cost of producing them. Having a closer relationship with the local tribes, Gallic Rome's military started equipping regular Roman soldiers with these blades, creating a new type of powerful infantry unit. Although never used in a traditional battleline, these warriors brought a particular mix of barbaric strength and civilised organisation to combat.
