Vexillationes
Sometimes a small band of soldiers is more efficient than an entire Legion. In the army of the Roman Empire, the word 'vexillatio' initially denoted a detachment of troops from a Roman Legion. Commanders formed such detachments to deal with situations that did not require the full strength of a Legion. A 'vexillatio' acted as a very mobile unit and could be raised from a parent Legion and integrated back into it relatively quickly. In the turbulent times of the 3rd century AD, however, the Roman army suffered from a lack of cohesion and 'vexillationes' turned into nigh-on autonomous units with poor coordination and doubtful efficiency. Later on, during the rule of Emperor Diocletian, the system was abandoned and the term 'vexillatio' was used to designate cavalry units.
