Etruscan Spears

The basic infantry unit in our armies are the spear-armed citizen hoplites, who fight in close formation as per the Greek model. However, in recent times our enemies have gained critical knowledge which has enabled them to advance and challenge the dominance of this well-established formation. Therefore, in order to preserve our edge on the battlefield, we have introduced more flexible and mobile tactics, resulting in a new class of ‘light infantry’, with lighter armour, throwing (rather than thrusting) spears and a new emphasis on hand-to-hand combat in looser formations, where individual prowess can take centre stage, as opposed to many hoplites fighting together as a phalanx.
