用導水管把水穿過好多裡從山間河流和湖泊輸送到城市是所有羅馬人的壯舉之一。羅馬人完善了很多現在科技都不能達到的技術。在羅馬建造400千米的導水管來提供公眾洗澡用水，噴泉用水和飲用水和公廁用水。水還被用到來農業，礦業和其他產業。

導水管的大部分是埋在底下的，但是標志性的水管還是像一座橋一樣高聳貫穿過大陸被留在了外面。最大的導水管是阿卡·瑪西婭有144千米長每天輸送182公升水。水流到了每個城市居民的家裡：公元200年11個導水管輸送將近1400公升水每人每天。這遠比今天對城市居民平均輸送水量還多。
