古羅馬圓形劇場是圓形或橢圓形的，傾斜看台上的座位都朝向中心舞台。戲劇是祭拜神迪奧尼索司的一種形式，如在春天舉辦的酒神節這樣的的戲劇節日既是宗教慶祝活動，也是娛樂活動。在圓形劇場裡面舉行的官方表演也僅供男人觀看，但是據記錄顯示，有些女性還是進入了劇場。
