在公元前315年的第二次萨莫奈战争之前，罗马人还使用方阵战术。罗马人在地形问题上吃够了苦头之后，借鉴了萨莫奈人的战术，衍生出更具机动性的小队系统。三小队取代了原来的大方阵：青年兵在阵前，经验丰富的中年兵站主阵线，最后是老兵守阵尾。
