圆形剧院会设计成圆形或者椭圆形，倾斜的楼座俯视剧场中心区域。戏剧是致敬酒神狄俄尼索斯的一种形式，类似在春季举办的酒神节，戏剧节日是令人愉悦的宗教庆典。圆形剧场的表演规定只对男人开放，但有记录显示有的女人也出席了庆典。

戏剧在希腊时期发生了演变，人们放弃了早期的宏大悲剧，更希望看到关于他们自身日常生活的戏剧，而不是众神的神话故事。这一新的戏剧形式就是风尚喜剧，现存的米南德喜剧残本表明，它们比阿里斯多芬尼斯和其他作家的滑稽作品更加构思缜密。这种“新喜剧”接着又影响了罗马剧作家
