罗马和希腊历史学家们常常将蛮族描绘成对农业和建造一无所知，以狩猎为生的游荡民族。这其实是一个大大的错误。已发现的一系列建筑物显示，所谓的蛮族其实有着精湛的建造技术，并能建造可以留存千年的房屋和防御系统。石塔房，这种在苏格兰发现的由干石堆砌而成的建筑经历了苏格兰风雨的洗礼，包含着有关建筑者的有趣信息。石塔房多为多层建筑，历史学家们仍然在争论它的原本用途：一些人相信他们是防御建筑，而另一些人则认为它是彰显财富和力量的象征式建筑

But these men are not experienced and have no training, so they are more useful as a local defence militia.
