在罗马人的竞技热情最鼎盛的年头，大竞技场内的一万五千个座位曾座无虚席，但即便如此仍不能将全部罗马人容纳在内。此处的娱乐活动盛况空前。座落于天然谷地之中的大竞技场已然成为了战车比赛的代名词，而其真实用途则囊括了各式各样的复杂赛事，罗马人以这种方式庆祝众多的宗教节日。与现代奥运会很像，兴办这些赛事的资金出自富有的赞助方，他们对比赛出资极尽慷慨，力图在豪华和排场上超越以往。除了战车赛，拳击、摔跤、角斗、田径、戏剧、演奏甚至斗象曾可当作比试的项目！大竞技场历经数次重建，观众的愉悦和安全曾是其首要考量，后来的重建则以刺激为目的牺牲了安全：恺撒为保护观众下令开挖的壕沟，尼禄却为了更好地亲临现场将其填平
