Небольшая община, основанная на общих целях и верованиях.Небольшие крестьянские поселения были опорой древних цивилизаций Востока. Люди селились рядом с ресурсами, которые могли поддержать их существование, будь то пахотная земля, залежи полезных ископаемых или богатые рыбой водоемы. Как правило, такие общины не имели настоящих укреплений, строительство и поддержание которых были слишком дороги. Поселки кормили великие города - Антиохию, Селевкию и многие другие, чье население постоянно увеличивалось и все более зависело от излишков продовольствия в провинции. В селах начали размещать небольшие гарнизоны для защиты людей и природных ресурсов. Это оживило торговые пути, а некоторые села стали постепенно превращаться в города.
