Kwitnące centrum handlu, pełne możliwości dla zdolnych przedsiębiorców.Niewielkie osady rolnicze były podstawą starożytnych cywilizacji wschodu – karmiły takie miasta jak Antiochia czy Seleucja. Wioski zakładane na ziemiach o dobrej glebie, w pobliżu łowisk, złóż minerałów lub kamienia, często nie mogły sobie pozwolić na ochronę.
W miarę rozwoju miasta potrzebowały coraz większych ilości jedzenia od małych osad. Rozstawienie niewielkich posterunków wojskowych zapewniło punktom wydobywczym i szlakom handlowym bezpieczeństwo oraz pozwalało wioskom stopniowo przekształcić się w miasta.
