Kolonia cywilna
Zbudowana na obraz swego ojczystego miasta, teraz przewyższa je bogactwami i porządkiem.Plan starożytnej hellenistycznej osady był owocem trwającej setki lat chaotycznej ewolucji. Zmieniał się wraz z potrzebami mieszkańców, którzy budowali, burzyli i przebudowywali miasto nie zastanawiając się nad jego ogólną organizacją.
Układy miast często wprowadzały zamęt, w związku z czym zaczęto wznosić osady na podstawie planu zabudowy, w myśl którego równomiernie rozmieszczone ulice zbiegały się na agorze – centrum życia społecznego starożytnej Grecji. Człowiekiem, któremu przypisuje się autorstwo tego pomysłu, był Hippodamus z Miletu, który twierdził, że korzyści płynące z takiego rozwiązania są więcej niż tylko praktyczne i pozytywnie wpływają na porządek oraz równowagę w społeczeństwie.
