Mauryan Empire Minor Settlement (Salt) Level 3
Eastern Small Town (Salt)
A thriving community with trade to attract new settlers.Small farming settlements were the backbone of ancient civilisations in the east, feeding the great cities such as Antioch and Seleucia. Situated to exploit good land, fishing, mining or quarrying, defence was often too expensive to be more than a secondary consideration. As the populations of the great cities increased, surplus food from these farming communities became essential. As small military garrisons were positioned to protect valuable resources and trade routes, there was a slow growth of many hamlets into towns, as people and trade passed.

Melee Infantry / パイク歩兵 / (AOR_9_Campanian_Hoplites) Kampanioi Hoplitai (Campanian Hoplites) These men are typical hoplites, wearing feathered or crested helmets, along with greaves and breastplates. Their weapons include the dory, xiphos, and the classic large aspis shield. However, they are more mobile than classic hoplites, useful as flanking heavy infantry rather than a central phalanx unit. |

Melee Infantry / 近接歩兵 / (AOR_9_Italy_Taurisci_Axemen) Taurisci Securiferi (Taurisci Axemen) One of the last Ligurian tribes to survive the Boii and Gallic invasions and assimilation, the Taurisci survive in central Italy. Seen as barbarians by the Romans and most of the southern Italic civilisations, they are equipped with a scutum, javelins, and a deadly light axe, similar to the Illyrian and Venetian tribes. These axemen are renowned as assault infantry. |

Melee Infantry / 槍歩兵 / (ind_levy_spearmen) Sainika (Indian Levy Spearmen) Most of these warriors are dressed in their everyday clothing, which includes loincloths, skirts, and short-sleeved shirts. The majority fight bare-chested, however. Spears and shields are cheap and easy to make, and spearmen make up a large part of the melee infantry. |

Missile Infantry / 飛び道具歩兵 / (ind_skirmishers) Ksipati Sainika (Indian Skirmishers) Most of these light skimishers are dressed in their everyday clothing, which includes loincloths, skirts, and short-sleeved shirts. The majority fight bare-chested, armed with daggers and throwing spears. These troops require relatively little training and financial investment, relying mostly on widespread natural skills and scant gear, while still providing some useful service. |

Missile Infantry / 飛び道具歩兵 / (ind_slingers) Kseptrayah (Indian Tribal Slingers) These slingers from the mountain and forest tribes carry small leather slings, just as easily used for hunting game as for hunting men. They carry no shields, as they do not intend to close with their prey until already downed. Nonetheless, they carry simple wooden clubs, useful for disposing their injured prey, but which can also be used for self-defence in melee, should the situation call for it. As speed and flexibility are key to their battlefield tactics, they wear no cumbersome armour, and their dress is the same simple clothing that they would wear on the hunt, or out foraging. |

Melee Infantry / 槍歩兵 / (ind_spearmen) Kauntikas (Indian Spearmen) These men, armed with spears and shields, are the mainstay of the Indian infantry. Some of the warriors wear a simple armoured corselet, made from strips of hardened leather. Their spears, which they wield in an underarm position, are made of wood or bamboo, with iron spearheads. |

Melee Infantry / 近接歩兵 / (ind_tribal_swordsmen) Thazhvar Sirupadai (Dravidian Sickle-Swordsmen) The Dravidian Hindu tribes, inhabiting regions of southern India, are fearsome warriors, wielding the Aruvaazh (or Sickle-Sword), a single-sided heavy sword. They wear no armour, much like the North Indian tribes. These men are more spiritual and fanatical, hence they are very warlike in nature. Their attitude gives them tirelessness and ferocity in battle. |
