Rhodos' vital lifeline to the world.

All states built their navies to safeguard their merchants' vital trade across the Mediterranean. The Carthaginians were the most daring seafarers of the ancient world, preferring to hire mercenaries for their land wars whilst concentrating on the construction of a huge fleet of ever-larger ships. As Carthaginian trade and the need to transport troops increased, so did the importance of sea control. They built vast war galleys manned by citizen rowers. Alongside Greek-style triremes, quinqueremes ('fives') and septiremes ('sevens'), reinforced for ramming, were constructed. Even so, the largest ship of the ancient world was the Syracusia, designed by Archimedes and built in 240BC by King Hiero II. It used some sixty times the resources needed for an average trireme and took 300 skilled workmen over a year to build.

Often called a liburnia in later Roman fleets, these swift yet durable warships are excellent for boarding actions and coastal patrols. (Saka Axemen) In addition to their iron sagaris axes, these warriors carry fire-hardened javelins. For protection, they carry square reed shields reinforced with leather, which, though light, are very resistant to missiles. They are best used for flanking already engaged foes or as lightly armoured shock troops, but if tied up in a lengthy melee against more organised or professional enemy warriors, they will soon break and flee.

2	80	Medium Ship / 近接艦 / (Bar_Assault_Trireme_Nomad) Trieres - Saka Tapabara A trireme is a 37 meter long oared warship (galley) with three decks of oars, developed from the bireme in the 5th century BCE. Popular with Carthaginian, Greek and Roman navies, this is the main warship of the classical age. (Saka Axemen) In addition to their iron sagaris axes, these warriors carry fire-hardened javelins. For protection, they carry square reed shields reinforced with leather, which, though light, are very resistant to missiles. They are best used for flanking already engaged foes or as lightly armoured shock troops, but if tied up in a lengthy melee against more organised or professional enemy warriors, they will soon break and flee.

3	80	Medium Ship / 飛び道具艦 / (Bar_Missile_Raider_Nomad) Missile Raider - Skuda Fistaeg Fat Aexsdzhytae Small raiding boats, with crews large enough to board enemy vessels. (Scythian Foot Archers) These archers are not well outfitted for hand to hand combat, as all they carry is a short sword or small pickaxe, and no armour but their thick jackets and bashlyk felt caps. If unsupported, they will be easy prey for cavalry or aggressive infantry who are fast enough to catch them.
