Le monete si trasformano in ciò di cui ha bisogno il loro proprietario.Sebbene il conio di monete ebbe origine probabilmente in Asia minore, e precisamente nella Lidia, i Greci adottarono rapidamente l’idea e usarono le proprie monete per pagare i mercenari barbari e comprare merci dall’occidente. Sebbene queste monete non avessero gran valore nell’economia dei barbari, essi erano però affascinati dall’oggetto in sé come esotico status symbol. Quando le tecniche di conio furono sviluppate, le si utilizzò in primo luogo per fare delle esatte copie delle monete greche, specialmente quelle più comuni, con temi che riguardavano Filippo e Alessandro.
Quando anche i barbari si resero conto dell’importanza delle monete, i fabbri locali cominciarono a sviluppare il proprio stile peculiare, con immagini sempre più astratte, come giganti, teste mozzate e divinità.
