Questi edifici permettono l’addestramento all’uso delle lance di cittadini o sudditi.Dopo l’età degli eroi, in cui combattere aveva a che fare con il valore individuale e le battaglie erano enormi zuffe piuttosto che incontri pianificati, gli eserciti iniziarono ad essere organizzati in unità disciplinate. Tra i conflitti tra città-stato all’orizzonte e le minacce dal mondo esterno, i Greci crearono i primi opliti intorno al 700 a.C. Si trattava di cittadini liberi, che combattevano come la fanteria e provvedevano ad armi e armature. Non c’era un equipaggiamento predefinito, per cui questi soldati trasportavano scudi e armature raffiguranti simboli di famiglia tramandati per generazioni. Tuttavia, il nome “oplite” deriva da una parte dell’equipaggiamento che tutti loro avevano in comune: lo scudo, l’hoplon. Questo scudo circolare poteva essere tenuto in modo da proteggere non solo chi lo portava ma anche chi si trovava alla sua sinistra. Quando schierati, gli opliti si muovevano in formazione a falange, marciando verso il nemico sotto forma di un solido muro.
