Tutti gli Stati costruivano le loro navi col fine di salvaguardare il vitale commercio dei loro mercanti lungo il Mediterraneo. Eppure, la nave più grande del mondo antico fu la Syracusia, progettata da Archimede e costruita nel 240 a.C. da re Gerone II. Per essere costruita, furono necessari circa sessanta volte le risorse usate per una comune trireme, trecento uomini, e un periodo di un anno.
