La caballería del este tenía influencias helénicas y persas, y los estados más al este preferían la armadura de escamas al estilo de los catafractos, como hacían los partos, y que protegían al jinete y al caballo. Como resultado, los reyes seléucidas que siguieron a Alejandro mantuvieron dos unidades de 1000 hombres de caballería de élite, los hetairoi, modelados a partir de los catafractos partos.

Siguiendo los ejemplos alejandrino y parto, la caballería pesada era el martillo de los recursos tácticos de los generales del este, ahuyentando a los enemigos antes de flanquearlos y explotando los flancos de la infantería vulnerables. Además se ayudaban del uso de la formación en cuña para incrustarse contra el enemigo y romper sus líneas organizadas.

The man in front appears to have a sword, and the man in back may have a bow. There are always two horses, but the box, its position, the number of spokes, wheel construction, and the number of men (1-3) are highly variable and often not very realistic.
