Los campamentos levantados rápidamente hacen que los ciudadanos o súbditos reclutados se familiaricen con los métodos de la guerra.

Después de la época de los héroes, cuando en las batallas se demostraba el valor de un individuo y estas se trataban más de una pelea que de un encuentro planificado, los ejércitos se organizaban en unidades disciplinadas. Con el aumento de los conflictos entre las ciudades-estado y las amenazas provenientes del mundo exterior, los griegos establecieron los primeros hoplitas allá por el 700 a. C. Estos eran ciudadanos libres que luchaban como infantería y que aportaban sus propias armas y armadura. No había un equipo estándar y estos soldados llevaban escudos y armaduras enaltecidas con símbolos familiares que se habían pasado generación tras generación. Sin embargo, el nombre de hoplita derivaba de un elemento del equipo que todos tenían en común: el escudo hoplón. Este escudo circular se llevaba no solo para proteger al portador sino al hombre que iba a su izquierda. Cuando iban en grupo, los hoplitas se desplazaban con su famosa formación en falange y marchaban hacia el enemigo como un muro impenetrable.

The short-sleeved iron scale corselet worn by these men provides a high degree of protection. They use a large old-fashioned, circular silver shield with an iron rim, similar to the Greek Aspis shield. Exceptionally well-drilled and trained, these men have the discipline and organisation to do whatever their lord might ask of them, and they are full of courage, unwilling to turn their back on the enemy.

Their clothes are those of the Persian kardaka, and their greek-style linen armour is reinforced with bronze scales. They also bear a short sword and a 75cm to 1-meter wide aspis shield, made with wood and reinforced with bronze. They also wear a crested Urartian cone helmet. In battle, they usually stay with the king.
