Los historiadores griegos a veces describían a las tribus bárbaras como gente errante que vivía de la caza y sabía poco sobre la ganadería y construcción. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Se han descubierto un gran número de estructuras que demuestran que los llamados "bárbaros" tenían un buen conocimiento de las técnicas de construcción y podían construir casas y defensas que han sobrevivido durante miles de años.

Los Brochs, edificios de piedra seca que se encuentran en Escocia, sobrevivieron a las duras condiciones meteorológicas y ofrecen información interesante sobre la gente que los construyeron. Muchos eran residencias de varias plantas y los historiadores aún debaten para qué se usaban: algunos piensan que eran estructuras defensivas, otros dicen que eran edificios de prestigio, símbolos de riqueza y poder.

They are peasants levied for war and trained for a time with warriors. They are poorely equipped for the most part, relying on their wooden shields for protection, and using a spear for defence and close fighting.

They have few truly military tasks. They act as a rearguard, mostly to protect the baggage train on campaign, and to support the more experienced Bagaudas in a line. But these men are not experienced and have no training, so they are more useful as a local defence militia.
