Grove of Diomedes

The lords of horses are fitting mounts for the lords of men.

Diomedes was worshipped on both sides of the Adriatic. For the Veneti, he was related to the breeding of horses, and they used to sacrifice a white horse at his sanctuary. The legend says it was here that a well-to-do man saved a wolf caught in hunters' nets. To show his gratitude, the wolf drove off a herd of unbranded horses to the stables of his saviour. These horses proved to be the superior Venetic breed that later became well known across the ancient world.
