盐是部落与希腊、罗马贸易的一个贵重商品。考古学家能够通过一种名为粗陶瓷的废弃材料来辨别盐产量高的地区。古代的盐制造业由陶器开始，海水被注入陶器中并风干，形成一块盐饼。接着将这些陶罐砸碎，就能够取出其中的盐饼，这就留下了大量的陶罐碎片，或者粗陶瓷片。近期一个在罗马尼亚伦卡，波亚娜布拉.斯拉蒂纳古迹附近一口盐泉的发现显示，公元6050年前新石器时代这个区域的住民就已经会通过蒸馏含盐的泉水来获得盐，这是人类已知最早的制盐活动
