厄舒蒙主要被尊为治愈之神，同时也是腓尼基城市赛达的守护者。他还兼顾繁育和生命的兴荣。厄舒蒙的神庙，如赛达邻近的巨大建筑，有着石质水道和大水盆，来使得信众们能在任何仪式之前沐浴净化。供品们被置于水箱和水池中以示对治愈的感谢或对得到厄舒蒙眷顾的希望。

厄舒蒙的故事起源有一点血腥，神经敏感的绅士们应该就此打住。

厄舒蒙本是一名凡人，他的美貌捕获了女神阿施塔特的心。她坚持不懈地追求他，决意要将他收为爱人。为了永久地逃离女神的手掌心，厄舒蒙用斧头阉割了自己。不幸的是他很快因此丧命。悲痛欲绝的阿施塔特将他复活，并使他成为了神祇。因此他的那一斧并没有达到理想的效果
