In Greek mythology, Deucalion and Pyrrha were spared from the wrath of the gods in the form of a massive flood. In order, to repopulate the Earth, they threw stones, which in turn became people. The first of these stones was a son named Hellen, from whom the Greeks received the name for themselves, Hellenes.
