Welsh Longbowmen

Whilst archers had their place in the battle lines of Celtic armies, they were never used in large numbers, as traditional military values places important on melee infantry and the glory of hand-to-hand combat. Whilst a noble may have been trained in how to use a bow as a hunting weapon, the standard freeman would not have had such training, unless he were a forest-dweller, where hunting was crucial to survival. Those who were, however, used the longbow that became common amongst the northwestern European peoples. Made of yew or ash, with bowstrings of looped and corded linen, longbows were superior to smaller varieties, particularly in Britain, where English and Welsh longbowmen became renowned for their skill in later centuries.
