Shawia Guard
Indomitable defenders, these men are as resolute as the very mountains. The Shawia, also known as the Chaoui, were a collection of Berber tribes that occupied the Aures Mountains and surrounding regions, to the west of the Nile. They are thought to be directly descended from the Zenata, the ancient father-tribe to most Berbers throughout antiquity. The Aures Mountains allowed the Shawia lands and peoples to become a consolidation point for resistance to Roman control, as well as later resisting the Vandals and Arabs. They were most famously represented by their queen, Kahina, in the 7th century, who resisted the Arabs after the collapse of the Western Roman and Sassanid Empires.
