Hostel
The weary traveller may find sustenance and rest, safe from the road's privations. In antiquity, lodges and hostels emerged along popular trade routes, as a place for the weary merchant to rest after a long day of travelling. They were particularly prevalent along the eastern Silk Road - some of these stops became so popular and well used that they developed into cities in their own right, such as Palmyra. In the Middle Ages, these roadside retreats became more entrenched, yet were still a haven for the traveller. The common peasant or worker had neither the free time nor the money to spend on frivolities such as drinking. Later, as the Medieval age dawned, this changed slightly, and taverns and inns became the lively resort of anyone with a thirst for ale (everyone) and the spare money to quench it!
