Basilica of Sol Invictus
"Undefeated sun, glowing benefactor, we thank you for this day…"Every nation in antiquity, in some ways, praised the sun. Sol Invictus, or the 'Unconquered Sun', became the official god of the Roman Empire in AD274, during the rule of Aurelian. Sol's epithet - 'unconquered' - resonated particularly with the soldiery, who adopted him as their patron. The extent of Sol Invictus' following - the 'Solar Cult' - is evidenced through Roman coinage of the time; it bore inscriptions such as "to the unconquered sun", and the Emperors were depicted in "radiant crowns", symbolising Sol Invictus himself. Even Constantine, the first Christian Emperor, wears such a crown on his coinage. However, it was later revised to symbolise the nails of Christ's crucifixion.
