The Kingdom of Aksum (present day Ethiopia and Eritrea) became a key player in the trade between the Roman Empire and India during the early centuries of the 1st millenium AD. As a result, it became more powerful and advanced than many of its neighbours. For instance, the Aksumites were the only nation in the region whose kings minted their own coins - a surefire indicator that a kingdom was on the rise, indicating a certain level of wealth and importance. Minted coins are also important in tracing a line of kings and often the religion they followed; Aksumite coins, for instance, denote their change in religion over the centuries, with later coins featuring a cross to mark King Ebana's conversion to Christianity during the first half of the 4th century AD.
