Winnowing Machines

The cornerstone of agriculture, much like warfare, is separating what is useful from what is not.

The art of winnowing - dividing needless chaff from the grain - was originally a rudimentary process, involving throwing threshed crops into the air, and letting the wind separate the husks.

Ever-inventive farmers, however, soon created devices to improve this method; the 'winnowing fan' creates its own airstream, making the separation process faster and more reliable.
