The rice paddy is a simple yet ingenious method of farming, labour intensive but highly productive. Rice is the heart of food production across China, but most especially in the south.
When the bounty of rice produced from the fertile slopes is supplemented with vegetables and fruit, livestock such as chickens and pigs, and fish pulled from the river, then no one need go hungry.
