


Etruscan City Guard
The great cities of the Etruscans are guarded by strong defenders, putting their citizens' minds at ease.The Etruscans, like the other eminent Greek and Latin peoples, had a strong military tradition. Like most other ancient societies, the Etruscans conducted their campaigns during the summer months, when the climate and weather were favourable to do so. Mainly, they raided neighbouring settlements, defended themselves against conquest attempts, and combated piracy. Warfare was considered an effective economic benefit - successful military efforts yielded strategic resources, prestige goods, and slaves. Prisoners were highly valued, to be ransomed back to their families at a high price or sacrificed to honour fallen leaders, such as those made by Achilles for Patroclus. The tombs of wealthy Etruscans were filled with shields, spears, swords, crested helmets and bronze armour, indicating their status in life. In cases where their equipment was damaged, representative sculpture was buried instead. The robust spear points and wide blades found in Etruscan grave sites resemble early Roman weaponry, showing their extensive adoption of the Etruscans' ways of war.
