Missile Penteres - Etruscan Archers
Archers can shoot down upon many enemies from the deck, doing terrible work in the process.Good archers will prove their worth many times over, even in a single battle.
The 'five', called a quinquereme in Latin and a penteres in Greek, was a ship first used by the Syracusans against the Carthaginians sometime around 398BC. Like other polyremes, a term meaning many-oared, the chances were that it did not have five banks of oars but that the word 'oar' was used to mean 'rower'. In such a case, the arrangement of rowers would be two-two-one going up from the waterline. It makes sense to keep as much weight as possible low in the vessel to help its stability; a high centre of gravity makes any ship liable to capsize if struck from the side. The quinquereme, then, would be a formidable vessel both in terms of appearance and combat value. With a large fighting contingent aboard and plenty of deck space, this heavy vessel could cope with most enemies and threats.
(Etruscan Archers)
The Etruscans, like the other eminent Greek and Latin peoples, had a strong military tradition. Like most other ancient societies, the Etruscans conducted their campaigns during the summer months, when the climate and weather were favourable to do so. Mainly, they raided neighbouring settlements, defended themselves against conquest attempts, and combated piracy. Warfare was considered an effective economic benefit - successful military efforts yielded strategic resources, prestige goods, and slaves. Prisoners were highly valued, to be ransomed back to their families at a high price or sacrificed to honour fallen leaders, such as those made by Achilles for Patroclus. The tombs of wealthy Etruscans were filled with shields, spears, swords, crested helmets and bronze armour, indicating their status in life. In cases where their equipment was damaged, representative sculpture was buried instead. The robust spear points and wide blades found in Etruscan grave sites resemble early Roman weaponry, showing their extensive adoption of the Etruscans' ways of war.
