Signalling
It is a powerful thing, to speak across empty distances. The evolution of signalling enabled easier communication between military camps, and enabled the orchestration of complex synchronised tactics on the battlefield. Messages tended to be carried by mounted couriers, but the introduction of a system using lights and mirrors extended the possible chain of communication. In battle, signals were often given by musical instruments. For instance, Parthian light horsemen carried out their complex ‘Parthian shot’ attack according to signals delivered by tympanon drums.
