Livestock Tax
Anything can be taxed, even the horns of a goat. While a lack of suitable land restricted the opportunities for arable farming, the mountainous regions of Greece provided vast areas suitable as pastures for livestock. Goats and sheep were the most profitable stock, as their meat, milk and wool were always in demand by growing populations and campaigning armies. Not surprisingly, the state began to seek their share of the profitable livestock trade, introducing taxes that applied when farmers transported their flocks through cities.
