Sluiced Mine
Controlling water levels and flow to uncover ore veins. No less sophisticated at working metal than their ‘civilised’ counterparts, mines were commonplace amongst the Celtic and Germanic tribes, especially tin mines in Britannia and the many gold mines of the Iberian Peninsula. What differed was the efficiency of the mining, which was often conducted by the lower castes, or ‘free-men’, of these tribal populations. Fire-setting, both in open-pit and shaft mines, was probably the most common and ancient mining practice employed. This involved setting a fire against the rock face being worked before cooling it rapidly with water, thus causing a fracture. This dangerous practice was widespread in Europe as early as the Bronze Age, continuing throughout antiquity and well into the medieval period. Nevertheless, these tribes attained much power and wealth through their hazardous endeavours.
