Souterrain
The depths of the earth are a safe place to store food.During the winter months, or in case of sieges, it was vitally important to have sufficient food stored at all times. The Celtic tribes of Gaul and Britannia, and the Germanic tribes to the north and east, employed a number of techniques to keep their people fed beyond harvest time. Archaeological digs from right across Europe have found storage pits and souterrains – primitive underground larders – in abundance, enabling us to piece together the diets of the ancient tribes. A souterrain found at Carn Euny in Cornwall, England, even has a roof made from heavy stone slabs to protect it from the elements. The ‘Hallggye Fogou’, further to the east, was constructed entirely underground; it consists of three chambers linked by a lengthy central tunnel, all cladded with stone to protect the supplies stored there.
