Great Dam of Marib
A monumental testament to the ingenuity of our people. With some slight flaws…The Great Dam of Marib - just outside the Sabaean city that shares its name - was one of the grandest engineering marvels of the ancient world. From the 8th century BC until the 5th or 6th century AD, the Great Dam sustained life in the desert around Marib, the largest city in ancient southern Arabia. First constructed to catch rainwater during the monsoon for irrigation purposes, the dam was modified in height and breadth over many centuries. However, this weakened the structure, leading to more frequent breaches that were more difficult to repair on each subsequent occasion. The dam has remained unrepaired since late in the 6th century AD; it is thought that the cost of repairs was too great following the collapse of the Himyarite Kingdom earlier in the century. This state of affairs led to the mass-migration of around 50,000 people who were living in the Dhana Valley - a great movement of people by the standards of the time, and something that even warranted a mention in the Quran.
