Altar of the Sun

"We must give thanks for the warming light of the sun."

As was common in the cultures of the ancient world (and probably borrowed, in this case, from their Carthaginian neighbours), the Numidian Berbers believed the sun and moon to be gods - the bringer of light, warmth and life, and its colder counterpart in the night sky. Like many other ancient peoples, the Berbers worshipped and sacrificed to the sun and moon, as described by Herodotus "They begin with the ear of the victim, which they cut off and throw over their house. This done, they kill the animal by twisting the neck. They sacrifice to the Sun and Moon, but not to any other god. This worship is common to all the Libyans."
