Madghacen

An eternal home for the Numidian kings.

As the resting place of the kings of the Massylian tribes, the mausoleum of Madghacen is the best known of the Numidian pyramidal tombs. Beginning in the 3rd century BC, the Berber kings - who preceded Massinissa - were all buried inside the funerary chamber following mummification. Its tumulus-like structure is composed of two parts: a cylindrical base and a cone formed of steps. The platform of the mausoleum is surrounded by sixty columns which support the cornice on which the cone stands. Atop, a further, truncated cone made of bleachers gives the mausoleum the appearance of a dome. The pyramid also contains three false doors; the ancient Numidians believed in life after death and for this reason added these doorways to serve as portals through which the living could communicate with the dead, and also through which the souls of the deceased could move in and out of the burial chamber in the next world.
