Temple of al-Uzza
A place to revere the 'mistress of heaven'.An important goddess for the Nabataeans, 'al-Uzza' means 'the mightiest one' in Arabic and was venerated at the ancient city of Petra. A sacred stone cube found near Mecca was used as part of her cult. As Hellenistic influences and traditions begun to make their way into Nabataean society, al-Uzza started to be associated with Aphrodite Ourania, the Greek goddess of love. 'Ourania', which translates as 'heavenly' or 'spiritual', was an epithet used to differentiate spiritual love of body and soul from its purely physical aspect.
