Camel Studs
A camel is a bizarre beast, yet has its advantages in battle. Many Middle Eastern warriors preferred camel cavalry to using horses in battle. In arid regions, the benefits were clear, as camels can store water in their humps and are generally hard to spook. They also have the 'advantage' of their peculiar smell which, up wind, was a guaranteed way of panicking any enemy horse units they came into contact with. The Romans first encountered camels during their decisive war against Antiochus III of the Seleucid Empire. At the Battle of Magnesia in 190BC, Antiochus deployed Arab bowmen riding camels alongside his deadly scythed chariots. As you might expect, the Seleucid forces were out-fought and defeated by the supremely-drilled Legions, but the Romans nevertheless appreciated the value of these foul-smelling beasts and formed units of dromedarii - literally 'camel riders' - to patrol their eastern desert frontiers. They were also used by the Emperor Claudius during the invasion of Britannia in AD43; he brought elephants to terrify the Britons and camels to spook their chariot horses - something which worked exactly as planned.
