Cavalry Barracks
The alae are ready to ride out at all times.Roman military forts mainly consisted of barracks, with some supporting buildings around them. Each one was a long, narrow building where 'contubernia' (squads of eight soldiers) were accommodated in a pair of connected rooms. Thus, a single barracks could house 80 people or more - the size of a centuria. Similar quarters were also assigned to horsemen. In the abovementioned pair of connected rooms, cavalrymen resided in the rear chamber, along with their equipment, while their mounts lived at the front. In this way, cavalrymen could not only easily care for their trusty beasts but, in case of danger, could ready themselves and ride straight out to meet threats straight away.
