Royal Road

When the king's coffers are empty, everyone suffers.

The collapsed Achaemenid Persian Empire left an enduring impression on the eastern Mediterranean in the form of its unique taxation system. Unlike most empires, Persia’s interference in its client territories was mostly limited to the collection of taxes in exchange for protection from neighbouring states. While this loose relationship enabled provincial wealth and reduced rebellions, it came at the cost of secure control. As soon as a more powerful figure, such as Alexander, appeared there was little to stop territories transferring their taxes and allegiances. This taxation system remained in place as rulers came and went, and is responsible both for the wealth of the eastern provinces and for the speed at which territorial control changed hands.
