The Barrow Legion
Long ago, Queen Neferata stole the secrets of eternal life from Nagash. The elixir she created was flawed, bestowing immortality but at great cost. And so the Vampires were created and they have been a plague upon the living ever since.
Millennia later, the darkling figure of Vlad von Carstein arrived in Sylvania – before long, the region's destitute nobility were in his thrall and the von Carstein bloodline was born. Every few centuries, a von Carstein would take the reins of power and strike out against mortals at the head of an Unliving army of zombies, wraiths, Necromancers and other abyssal monstrosities.
The Empire has thwarted such legions before, but the dead have never rested easily in Sylvania and now they lurch from their graves, summoned to Unlife by the Midnight Aristocracy as each prepares to challenge mankind once more.

The Lichemaster prowls his old wanderings in the Grey Mountains, plotting his next move against sworn enemies in nearby Bretonnia and the Empire. Heinrich Kemmler, the cunning Lichemaster who has troubled the Old World on many occasions is once more abroad. Freed from the shackles and illusion of subservience to the von Carsteins, the Necromancer now prowls his old wanderings in the Grey Mountains, which straddle the border between the Empire and Bretonnia - sworn enemies who have moved against him in the past. But Kemmler has always coverted power beyond anything else, and this time the Forces of Order will not stop him - the dead will rise and the world will fall!
Heinrich Kemmler burns with the need for power. Having recognised the limits that mortality placed upon him in his early years, Kemmler made it his life's work to escape them.
