Enriched by trade, but with only a few small armies, Italian city states have resorted to hiring companies of mercenaries known as Condottieri. Very well equipped with a lance and plate armour, these trained and experienced soldiers are known for their capricious behaviour, such as avoiding combat, and swapping sides for better pay before or even during battle!
