早在第一次十字軍東征時，虔誠的穆斯林們就被那些「法蘭克」的重裝步兵和騎士震撼了，在隨後的戰鬥中，借助鎧甲優勢的西歐武裝軍隊總是能擊敗他們，於是，從法蒂瑪王朝的蘇丹開始，阿拉伯人就有意識的給自己的軍隊裝備重型鎖子甲，中東的鑄造技術要優於歐洲，但是這個兵種不屬於沙漠兵種，而且在戰鬥技能上也略遜於他們的歐洲對手，但是他們用士氣和紀律來補償。阿拉伯職業步兵脫胎於退伍老兵和小貴族，不甘田園生活的單調，重新拿起武器加入為金錢而戰的行列，因為盔甲和武器皆是自備，所以裝備略遜於他們的在伍同行，但仍要比普通軍隊中的士兵精銳很多。
