Dao Swordguard Cavalry

The swing of a dao, from horseback, is the last thing many see before their head is cleaved from their neck.

Unlike shock cavalry, which are deployed to devastate enemy lines with repeated, bone-shattering charges, sword cavalry are designed to remain in the melee, holding against the enemy with shield and sword.

the dao, a single-edged blade, is used mainly for slicing and chopping at enemies, and has almost entirely replaced the double-edged jian in common Jin armies. Cavalry, however, have long used a form of dao, as wide, sweeping slashes from horseback are more effective than skewering thrusts.

Unit Abilities

  • Miasma
    The dense and tough undergrowth that plagues the jungles of the South is a hindrance to all those who try to penetrate into the heartlands of the Nanman.
  • Diamond
    The unit forms into a hard-edged diamond, good for both offence and defence but limiting manoeuvrability.
  • Loose
    The unit spreads apart, making it more difficult for arrows to hit them.
  • Wedge
    The unit forms into a spear-tip, best for driving directly through enemy lines.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Role: anti-missile
    A shielded and fast-moving unit that absorbs missile fire to charge into vulnerable missile units.
  • Missile defence
    These troops carry shields to protect them from incoming missiles, but offer little defence against artillery.
  • Vulnerable to spears
    This unit's speed and mass will work against it if charging the pointy end of enemy spears!
