Rorarii

I rorarii, armati di lance, possono far raggiungere velocemente un punto di crisi in battaglia.

L’espressione latina “rem ad triarios redisse”, lett. “essere ridotto ai triarii”, significava combattere fino alla fine. I veterani triarii si trovavano nella terza linea, dietro gli hastati e i principes, ed erano impiegati solo quando l’esercito era sulla via della sconfitta. Tuttavia, questo celebre modo di dire escludeva il numerosissimo rango dei rorarii, che si trovavano dietro i triarii e, quando schierati, costituivano l’estrema linea difensiva. La storia non fornisce molti dettagli circa il ruolo di questi soldati; pare fossero armati di lance e scudi e considerati fanteria leggera. Venivano impiegati come schermagliatori di riserva, come supporto di tiro alla fanteria pesante, o forse riempivano i varchi lasciati tra le linee dei triarii. Si pensa che i rorarii provenissero dai ceti popolari romani più poveri, ed erano uomini giovani e con poca esperienza. Può darsi che appartenessero al sistema di falangi di stile romano. Al tempo della Seconda guerra punica, i rorarii furono sostituiti dai veliti.
